CRC’s COMMUNITY COOKOUT/DEI SYMPOSIUM

Celebrating Community: Recap of the First Community Unity Cookout and DEI Symposium

Hello Charlotte Runners,

What an unforgettable day it was! We’re still feeling the warmth, joy, and powerful sense of togetherness from our first-ever Community Unity Cookout and DEI Symposium. This was more than just an event—it was a celebration of culture, community, and collaboration that brought us all closer together.

A Day Full of Heart and Soul

From the moment we kicked off the day, it was clear that this wasn’t going to be just another gathering. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter, music, and heartfelt conversations as people from all walks of life came together to share in the spirit of unity. We transcended the typical, data-driven definitions of diversity, turning them into something tangible—a living, breathing celebration of inclusion and representation within the Charlotte running community.

We saw new friendships form, old ones rekindled, and a deep sense of belonging take root. The cookout was a feast not just for the body but for the soul, with delicious food shared among friends, both old and new. We dusted off our dancing shoes, and before long, everyone was moving to the rhythm of the music, letting the beats bring us closer together.

Honoring Our Legends and Giving Back

One of the most meaningful moments of the day was when we paused to honor the legends who have paved the way for our community, such as Reggie McAfee and his nonprofit organization Cross Country for Youth. Their contributions, both big and small, have shaped the path we walk today, and it was an honor to recognize them in front of a crowd that was truly appreciative of their efforts.

We also made it a point to give back to the community that gives us so much. Through various initiatives during the day, like partnering with local run club, Mad Miles, we were able to support local causes. It was a powerful reminder that when we come together, we can create positive change that ripples out far beyond our immediate circle.

Forging Family, One Moment at a Time

What stood out most during this event was the deep sense of connection that formed. It wasn’t just about the activities or the food—it was about the people. One hug, one cry, and one “Who are you?” at a time, we forged a family. Strangers became friends, friends became family, and the entire community felt like one big, welcoming home.

The DEI Symposium, led by local speaker and DEI expert, Haley Mangrum, was a space where important conversations took place, with everyone contributing their voice to the dialogue. It was a day of learning, understanding, and most of all, growing together. We tackled tough topics led by Haley with grace and openness, always keeping in mind that our goal was to build bridges and strengthen bonds.

A Day to Remember

As we reflect on this incredible day, we’re filled with gratitude for everyone who came out and made it so special. The Community Unity Cookout and DEI Symposium was everything we hoped it would be—a day full of culture, love, and inclusion with our local partners and community members. It was a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we come together with open hearts and minds.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared a meal, danced, laughed, and contributed to the conversations. This event was just the beginning, and we’re excited to continue building on this momentum in the Charlotte running community as we move forward.

Until next time, let’s keep the spirit of unity alive in everything we do.

With love and gratitude,

The Charlotte Running Company Team
